If your tastes lean toward the glamorous side of the spectrum you probably got a little sparkle in your eye with my previous Art Deco Style post. Today I have another glamorous style for you ...Contemporary Glamour!
While Art Deco style references a specific era, Contemporary Glamour is of-the-moment. It is a mix of decadent decor from any era, but with a very livable quality to it. Rooms should feel welcoming, not stuffy, but still exude richness.
How to Get the Look - Key Elements
MATERIALS - Polished stone, crystal, animal hides, acrylic, high-end textiles (mohair, velvet, silk, cashmere, fur, wool), and sumptuous wall coverings...if these materials were people they would all be "it" girls.
COLORS & FINISHES - Metallic, mirrored, gilded or translucent...there has to be sparkle! For an easy formula try mixing your favorite metallic with your favorite color and either black or white. Think tuxedo with an evening gown! If you are more adventurous feel free to mix metals and add in more colors.
FURNISHINGS - These should be luxurious but comfortable. In the words of Coco Chanel, "Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it's not luxury." Pay attention to the details....a gorgeous fringe, a contrast welt, jewelry-like hardware, a delicate inlay. Even if you can't afford custom-made, find pieces that give you the same feel, or upgrade a retail item with your own custom details.
LIGHTING - Your lighting really has to make an impression. Think of it as the jewelry of the room, and you want a giant, impressive diamond ring! This is your chance to bring in a lot of that sparkle you need to pull off the look. Metallics work well here as do natural stone, glass and lacquered finishes. Also, make sure you highlight reflective surfaces in the space with uplights, downlights or spotlights!
PRINTS - Animal prints are top of the list of course, followed by a hefty dose of geometrics.
